On Tuesday, February 26, executives from Kaleida Health, John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital and Explore & More Children’s Museum were joined by Robert Gioia, Chairman of the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation, to announce plans for Learning, Caring, Healing, an interactive Oishei Children’s Hospital exhibit inside the new 43,000-square-foot Explore & More Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Children’s Museum opening at Canalside in spring 2019.
The new Learning, Caring, Healing educational exhibit will foster experiential learning in a safe, fun and colorful atmosphere to familiarize kids and families with the medical tools, equipment and procedures used at Oishei Children’s Hospital. Kids will also have the opportunity to role-play — from a doctor or nurse to an X-ray technician or researcher – and discover the many important and varied opportunities available in the fields of medicine and clinical research.
For kids in medical settings, play can be a powerful tool. “We use medical play at Oishei Children’s Hospital to help kids and families cope with the anxiety that a trip to the emergency room or a hospital stay can bring, said Allegra Jaros, MBA, President at Oishei Children’s Hospital. “Similarly, we hope to empower kids to take control over their health and healthcare experiences by familiarizing them with the state-of-the-art tools and equipment used at Oishei Children’s Hospital.”
The hands-on exhibit, funded by The Children’s Hospital of Buffalo Foundation, will feature child-size elements of Oishei Children’s Hospital including teddy bear ‘patients,’ medical tools, exam rooms, hospital beds, a nurse’s station, a hand washing station, radiology equipment and adjoining research lab. It will also prominently feature the same bright colors, Buffalo-themed wayfinding imagery and kid-friendly murals found inside the 185-bed world-class hospital for women and children on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.
“Kaleida Health is proud to partner with Explore & More Children’s Museum to create an interactive space for kids and families to discover the life-saving work and innovation that happens at Oishei Children’s Hospital each and every day,” said Jody Lomeo, President and CEO of Kaleida Health. “Through this new exhibit, we hope to inspire and nurture the minds of kids to become next generation of leaders in the fields of science, medicine, technology and research – securing a healthier and more prosperous future for all Western New Yorkers.”
Inside the new Oishei Children’s Hospital Learning, Caring, Healing exhibit, kids will have the opportunity to:
Role play as a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, radiology technician or researcher to discover career opportunities available in the healthcare field
Put on a lab coat and diagnose a teddy bear patient’s symptoms in a private exam room
- Learn about a career as a radiology technician using a child-size version of X-ray and MRI machines that light up and make sounds just like the original
- Practice good hand hygiene and stop the spread of germs by ‘washing’ at the hand washing station
- Send blood samples from the exam room to the lab using a pneumatic tube system
- Investigate scientific hypotheses and solve problems as a clinical researcher by utilizing video microscopes, test tubes, beakers and other lab equipment
The new four-story, 43,000-square-foot Explore & More – The Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Children’s Museum at Canalside will feature seven educational play zones offering hands-on exhibits that tell the story of Western New York – the importance of the region’s waterways, rich cultural history and traditions, architecture, agriculture, sports, industry and innovations. The new museum at Canalside will open to the public spring 2019.
