The Department of Pediatric General & Thoracic Surgery at Oishei Children's Hospital (OCH) was established in 1957 and specializes in the surgical care of newborns, children, adolescents and young adults up to the age of 21. As a Level IV NYS Designation Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, OCH provides on-site access to pediatric surgical specialists for the comprehensive care of neonates, and is the only hospital in Western New York with 24/7 access to pediatric surgical sub-specialists for neurosurgery, general surgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, dental and urology.
The department is committed to excellence in teaching, cutting-edge research programs and providing the highest quality of care for the surgical needs of the children of Western New York and the surrounding regions. These efforts make the Division of Pediatric Surgery a nationally/internationally recognized academic unit of OCH. It is the preferred place for a child to receive care in this region and beyond.
Home to the region’s only minimally invasive surgery program for children, OCH pediatric surgeons utilize laparoscopic tools, high-definition TV monitors and LED lighting to deliver the highest standard of care and to assure the most optimal outcome for each patient. The operating room provides a high quality surgical environment and is the only pediatric operating room in Western New York for the performance of procedures in all of the subspecialties of pediatric surgery.
Surgeons are Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and have completed two-year fellowships in Pediatric Surgery. These surgeons, along with pediatric surgery fellows and pediatric nurse practitioners, staff the department. More than 2,000 surgical procedures are performed yearly, and over 5,000 patients are seen annually by the staff, on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.
Oishei Children's Hospital has been designated by New York State as a Regional Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. Care is provided to the eight county regions of Western New York and to Southern Ontario. The Emergency Department at OCH treats over 40,000 patients annually and provides 24-hour immediate care for children and adolescents in acute or crisis situations. Traumatic and accidental injuries account for nearly 12,000 of these Emergency Room visits.
Miniature Access Surgery
The Miniature Access Surgery Center, located at OCH, includes two new state-of-the-art operating rooms fully equipped to perform multi-disciplinary minimally invasive surgery such as laparoscopy and endoscopy. Board certified surgeons believe that miniature access surgery is in the best interest of patients, and, as a result, every surgical case is considered for a potential laparoscopic procedure.
Women’s surgical health needs are met by surgical specialists in obstetrics and gynecology and adult general surgery.
