The Multidisciplinary Pediatric Thyroid Center at Oishei Children’s Hospital is a comprehensive program for children with thyroid disease. Thyroid disease in children and adolescents is very different than in adults. Although thyroid nodules are rare in children, they are much more likely to represent a malignancy (25% vs. 5-10%). In addition, the pathology, prognosis and molecular genetics of differentiated thyroid cancer in children and adolescents is different than in adults. Therefore, it is important that children with thyroid disease be treated at a pediatric center.
At the Pediatric Thyroid Center, we work as a clinical care team to bring the best care to children and adolescents with thyroid disease. We have the combined expertise of dedicated pediatric endocrinologists, a pediatric surgeon in collaboration with an adult endocrine surgeon specializing in thyroid disorders, as well as pediatric oncologists, interventional radiologists, pathologists, and nuclear medicine specialists with expertise in thyroid disease. Diseases treated at the Thyroid Center include, but are not limited to, thyroid nodules, differentiated thyroid cancer, multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, medullary thyroid carcinoma, Graves disease/hyperthyroidism, and syndromes associated with endocrine tumors. Our specialists will work with your child’s primary care provider to learn about their medical conditions and communicate the management plan to your child’s doctor.
